Mikao Usui, the father of Reiki, formulated five profound and straightforward principles:


Just for today: Do not worry

Just for today: Do not anger

Just for today: Be grateful

Just for today: Work honestly

Just for today: Be kind to yourself and others



Even though there are simple principles, they are powerful when we apply them to our day-to-day lives. We know life is not always easy; sometimes, it can get quite challenging. Many times we are put into situations that we don’t have any control over. These situations can leave us feeling very angry, frustrated, lost, hurt, sad, and the list can keep going. When life gets out of control, we can choose to lose it entirely or stay in our center.


I like to think about life like it’s an ocean. Sometimes the waves are big and strong, and other times the waves are gentle and easy to surf. Other days, the sea is flat with no locks, and we can chill and relax.


When life gets challenging, I remind myself that “just for today: do not worry.” I use the Reiki principles as a mantra, especially on those days when nothing goes as planned. Applying these principles to real life brings me peace and a sense of safety and security. Repeating these principles in my mind reminds me to let things come and let things go, to surrender. The Reiki principles can be used as affirmations, mantras, and reminders to apply in challenging times.


One time I hear that happiness is a choice. I agree with this statement. No matter what happens in our lives, we can choose to see the big picture and understand that everything is here to help us evolve and transform.


We are the creators of our reality, and we can choose not to be angry or worry, just for today, and say thank you for being ALIVE.
